LinkedIn Profile URL: Format, Examples, and How to Find One
Every valid LinkedIn URL format, how to grab one, and how to set up a clean custom vanity URL for your own profile.
A LinkedIn profile URL is the web address that points to a single member's profile page. Every URL follows a consistent format, with a few historical variations and one common share-link wrinkle. This guide covers every format LinkedIn uses, how to find your own URL or someone else's, and how to clean up an ugly default URL with a custom vanity slug.
The standard LinkedIn profile URL format
Every active LinkedIn member profile uses this format:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/username/
Breaking it down:
linkedin.com— the base domain./in/— the path segment for individual member profiles. This is fixed; it never varies./username— the vanity slug, unique per member.- The trailing slash is optional; LinkedIn accepts both.
Real examples:
linkedin.com/in/satyanadellalinkedin.com/in/sundarpichailinkedin.com/in/marc-benioff-9a06b3
The default (non-custom) format
If a member hasn't set a vanity URL, LinkedIn assigns a default one based on their name plus a uniqueness hash:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/firstname-lastname-12a3b4c5/
The trailing characters (12a3b4c5) are a hex hash that ensures uniqueness when multiple members share a name. These URLs work identically to vanity URLs, just less memorable.
Other LinkedIn URL formats you might encounter
Mobile share link
https://www.linkedin.com/in/?profileId=ACoAAB...
Generated when you share a profile from the LinkedIn mobile app. These usually redirect to the canonical /in/username URL on click, but tools that parse URLs without following redirects can choke on them. If a LinkedIn Profile Viewer rejects this format, click through first and copy the resolved URL.
Public profile URL with locale
https://uk.linkedin.com/in/username https://de.linkedin.com/in/username https://fr.linkedin.com/in/username
LinkedIn serves locale-specific subdomains for some regions. The profile data is the same; only the localization layer changes. Most LinkedIn Profile Viewers normalize these to www.linkedin.com automatically.
Recruiter / Sales Navigator deep links
https://www.linkedin.com/sales/lead/... https://www.linkedin.com/recruiter/profile/...
These are internal product URLs that only work for paying Recruiter or Sales Navigator subscribers. They don't translate cleanly to public profile URLs and won't work in a public LinkedIn Profile Viewer.
Company and group URLs (not profile URLs)
Worth flagging because people confuse these with member profiles:
linkedin.com/company/microsoft— company pagelinkedin.com/school/stanford— school pagelinkedin.com/groups/123456— group page
Only /in/ URLs are individual member profiles. A LinkedIn Profile Viewer is for /in/ URLs specifically.
How to find your own LinkedIn profile URL
- Sign in to LinkedIn.
- Click Me (top-right) and pick View Profile.
- The URL in the address bar is your profile URL.
Or, on the right side of your profile page, click Edit public profile & URL. Your URL appears at the top of that page — this is also where you can customize it.
How to find someone else's LinkedIn profile URL
Three reliable methods:
- Search on LinkedIn. Type their name, click into their profile, copy the URL from the address bar.
- Search on Google. Use
site:linkedin.com/in/ "Their Name" companyand click the result. - Check linked sources. Personal websites, GitHub profiles, conference speaker pages, and email signatures often contain the direct URL.
Once you have the URL, you can paste it into a LinkedIn Profile Viewer to see the public profile data without signing in.
How to set up a custom LinkedIn vanity URL
- Go to your LinkedIn profile.
- Click Edit public profile & URL (top-right).
- On the next page, look for Edit your custom URL in the right sidebar.
- Click the pencil icon and enter your desired slug.
- Click Save.
Rules: 3-100 characters, alphanumeric plus hyphens, must be unique. You can change it up to 5 times every 6 months. The best slug is your name (/in/firstnamelastname) or your name plus a single qualifier (/in/firstnamelastname-eng).
The bottom line
Every LinkedIn profile URL follows the linkedin.com/in/username format. Custom vanity slugs are clean; default ones have a hash suffix; mobile share links and Recruiter URLs can break tools that expect the canonical form. Once you have a valid /in/ URL, you can paste it into our free LinkedIn Profile Viewerto see the public profile data instantly — no login, no account, no entry in the profile owner's viewer list.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What does a LinkedIn profile URL look like?
- Every LinkedIn profile URL follows the format linkedin.com/in/username, where 'username' is the user's vanity slug. For example, linkedin.com/in/satyanadella. The 'in' stands for 'individual' (companies use linkedin.com/company/name and groups use linkedin.com/groups/id).
- How do I find my LinkedIn profile URL?
- Open your LinkedIn profile, click 'Edit public profile & URL' in the top-right of the public profile section, and your URL appears at the top. On mobile, tap your profile photo, then tap your profile, then tap 'Contact info' to see the full URL. You can also just copy the URL from your browser address bar while viewing your own profile.
- How do I find someone else's LinkedIn profile URL?
- Search the person on LinkedIn, click into their profile, and copy the URL from the browser address bar. Alternatively, search Google for 'site:linkedin.com/in/ <name> <company>' and copy the URL from the search result.
- Can I customize my LinkedIn profile URL?
- Yes. LinkedIn lets every member set a custom vanity URL once, then change it up to 5 times every 6 months. Go to your profile, click 'Edit public profile & URL', and edit the URL field on the right. Vanity URLs must be 3-100 characters, alphanumeric, and unique. Once taken, a vanity URL is held by the original owner indefinitely (LinkedIn does not auto-release them).
- Why does my LinkedIn URL have random numbers and letters?
- If your URL looks like linkedin.com/in/firstname-lastname-12a3b4c5, that's the default URL LinkedIn assigns to new accounts. The trailing characters are a uniqueness hash. You can replace it with a clean vanity URL by going to 'Edit public profile & URL' and customizing the slug.
- Does the LinkedIn URL format affect how a LinkedIn Profile Viewer works?
- Yes — most LinkedIn Profile Viewers expect a URL in the standard linkedin.com/in/username format. Mobile share links (linkedin.com/in/?profileId=xxx) and old format URLs sometimes don't parse cleanly. If a viewer fails, copy the desktop URL directly from the browser address bar after clicking through to the profile.
